global potential
The potential for producing electricity from the power of the oceans is significant and figures from the International Energy Agency (IEA) have shown an accessible tidal energy of Circa:
- Global: 2.200 TWh/year Tidal (Canadian experts estimate the potential to be 3000 TWh)
- Europe: ≥ 100 TWh
- UK: ≥50 TWh
- France ≥ 40 TWh
- Norway: ≥1-3 TWh
- The ocean currents will give an even higher accessible energy figure but are more distant from shore
and as such will require greater investment on infrastructure.
- Ocean related energy sources are estimated globally to be higher than 100 000 TWh.
- Energy consumption on earth today is Circa 13 000 TWh
